Women tend to drive small and lightweight cars, making them more vulnerable to serious injuries in a car accident, a recent study says.
The report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examined crash data from 1998-2015. It found that women are more likely to be victims of moderate injuries in serious wrecks than men. Women also tend to sustain lower leg injuries more often than men, according to the study.
In crashes that strike the front of a vehicle, women were three times as likely to sustain a broken bone, concussion, or other moderate injury. They were twice as likely to be seriously hurt with injuries such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or collapsed lung.
Researchers note that the nation’s commitment to improved vehicle safety appears to be paying off.
“The good news is that changes like strengthening the occupant compartment and improving seat belts and airbags have helped protect both men and women,” says Dr. Jessica Jermakian, who leads the IIHS vehicle research division and is one of the study authors.
“Homing in on the risk disparities that still exist in crashes gives us a great opportunity to make further gains,” she adds.
Los Angeles Car Accident Deaths on the Rise
While modern auto designs thankfully focus on safety, far too many Californians — women and men alike — sustain severe and fatal injuries in crashes every year. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Los Angeles experienced a fatal traffic collision every 36 hours, according to the Los Angeles Times. The numbers have started to spike again as restrictions have been loosened.
